چکیده

Low resolution meteorological satellite and high resolution earth resources satellite data have been used to map snowcovered area over the upper Indus River and the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, respectively. For the Indus River early Spring snowcovered area was extracted and related to April through June streamflow from 1967-1971 using a regression equation (r = 0.91). Prediction of the April-June 1972 streamflow from the satellite data was within three percent of the actual total. Composited results from two years of data over seven Wind River Mountain watersheds indicated that LANDSAT-1 snowcover observations, separated on the basis of watershed elevation, could also be related to runoff in significant regression equations. It appears that earth resources satellite data will be useful in assisting in the prediction of seasonal streamflow for various water resources applications, non hazardous collection of snow data from restricted-access areas, and in hydrologic modeling of snowmelt runoff.

Yukon River streamflow response to seasonal snow cover changes

We used remotely sensed weekly snow water equivalent (SWE) and snow cover extent (SCE) data to investigate streamflow response to seasonal snowcover change over the Yukon watershed. We quantified the seasonal cycles and variations of snowcover (both SWE and SCE) and river streamflow, and identified a clear correspondence of river discharge to seasonal snowcover change. We also examined and comp...

Evaluation of snow models in terrestrial biosphere models using ground observation and satellite data: impact on terrestrial ecosystem processes

Snow is important for water management, and an important component of the terrestrial biosphere and climate system. In this study, the snow models included in the Biome-BGC and Terrestrial Observation and Prediction System (TOPS) terrestrial biosphere models are compared against ground and satellite observations over the Columbia River Basin in the US and Canada and the impacts of differences i...

OPERATIONAL REMOTE SENSING FOR SNOWCOVER RüNOFF AND AV ALANCHE APPL!CATIONS IN TI!E HIMALAYAS'

Snow in the Himalayas is a vital resource to India, but also a hazard in the form of avalanches. Therefore, hydrological records are in great demand. Tue Snowhydrology Team of NRSA today is providing seasonal and short-term snowmelt runoff forecasts for various basins on an operational basis. Tue model for avalanche hazard zone mapping is ready for implementation. Tue chosen concept development...

Recent trends in precipitation and streamflow in the Aconcagua River Basin

In this paper, trends in streamflow and precipitation at the annual, seasonal and monthly timescales for different periods of records are analysed for the Aconcagua River Basin in central Chile. In this mountainous basin in the dry Andes water resources originate mainly from glaciers and seasonal snowcovers. The Mann-Kendall nonparametric test is used, and statistically significant trends are i...

Advances in Remote Sensing of Snow and Ice for Modelling the Runoff Process

Satellite monitoring of the seasonal snow cover in the visible range of the spectrum has been constantly improved thanks to a better spatial resolution. Sensors were introduced enabling snow, clouds and glacier ice to be distinguished. Thanks to refined data processing combined with a Geographic Information System (GIS), a method was developed to restore satellite images of the snow cover parti...
